Dick and Linda Fink turn 60

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Most people will do just about anything to keep from going outside on piercing cold nights as was the case on January 19th. It went down to about -12. But, hey there was a surprise 60th birthday party for Dick and Linda Stowe Fink. I bundled up, kept the seat warmers on max and went to the party. Linda and Jim Grisim, Dan and Cheryl Nesseth, and Gary and Kristi Pasek were there also. A good time was had by all. We looked back … and talked about the sixties. We looked forward … and talked about the sixties, retirement and travel. Dick and Linda had traveled to Alaska in September. Linda was sick for a lot of the trip but they still saw a lot and had a great time. Dick says that if he had gone there when he was 22 he never would have come back. Linda is doing better now, but continues to battle fibromyalgia. Dick’s birthday was December 2nd and Linda’s was November 24. Dick was the youngest in our class. What a great couple! Happy birthday to good friends! Posted by Pat Nelson

Herman Transburg rides off in the sunset…

It always amazes me when I talk to Malt-O-Meal employees about their community involvement, and Herman Transburg is no exception. I kept thinking, “When does the guy find time to sleep?”

Herman started at Malt-O-Meal on November 5, 1979. One of his early highlights was running the batch gun. He said, “Boy, you could really feel the floor shake when you opened one of those up!”

Herman has been involved in the Defeat of Jesse James re-enactment for quite a few years. The first time he rode in the event was in 1980, and he became a regular in 1992. They do four re-enactments on Saturday, two on Sunday, and last year added two more on Friday night. That’s a lot of ridin’, shootin’, and getting plugged to be doing in one weekend.

Herman has a significant other-Mary, two sons and a daughter, and four granddaughters. One of his highlights has been having his sons ride with him in the re-enactment for the last eight years or so.

Herman also appeared in a “In Search of…” episode (hosted by Leonard Nimoy) about the James Gang raid that was filmed in 1981 in the Waterford area and at the DeMann farm.

Herman has been the Chairman of the Defeat of Jesse James rodeo event for the last five years. He is a past member of the Northfield Historical Society, and is a current member of the Civil War Roundtable Club, which meets at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault.

Herman also has an interest in tractors and belongs to Chapter 15 of the International Harvester Collectors. He also is part of the Rice County Steam and Gas Club, which holds a big fall show featuring steam driven farm equipment on Labor Day weekend at their location south of Northfield on Hwy. 3. They also hold a smaller spring show.

Once a week in the fall, Herman takes part in a wagon train to benefit Camp Winnebago in Caledonia. They typically travel around 130 miles in a week, and over the last two years have raised more than $30,000 to benefit young people and adults with disabilities. Herman mentioned that Malt-O-Meal and MOM Cares have also been very good supporters of this event.

In his spare time, Herman has been putting together the “Wild West Roundup”, a re-creation of a small western town complete with storefronts. They re-enact a roundup on the second weekend in June of each year.

Herman retired from Malt-O-Meal in the December. It sounds like he will be down to only one or two full-time jobs once that happens. Herman is another good example of a Malt-O-Meal employee who carries his “Great Service” attitude over into community involvement. – Posted by n. larsen

Retirees

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

We have finally reached the “golden years”.  Dan Nesseth/Cheryl Hall Nesseth have both retired.  Dan retired from Malt O Meal after 29 1/2  years  on July 6. Cheryl retired May 18 from the Northfield Hospital (Home Care) after 7 years there and 30 years for the State of Minnesota reaching the “Rule of 90″ and therefore eligible for a monthly benefit.  Social security is just down the road.  We practiced retirement in May with going to Branson and seeing the one remaining Righteous Brother and Paul Revere and the Raiders. They were awesome.  We did a whirlwind tour of Iowa in July, casinos, John Wayne, Amana colonies, etc.    Dan went to work part time in November for Ace Hardware in Northfield.  Loves it, helps people fix things and knows most customers.    Plan on trip in February to Palm Springs, California with Jim/Linda Grisim.  It’s hard to believe we are now “senior citizens” and AARP eligible for discounts.  We are enjoying.   -Posted by Cheryl Hall Nesseth

party after the party

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Because of other committments, some of the 1965 grads were not able to attend the birthday party. A few weeks later a few of us gathered for lunch. Mary Jo McKenzie was in town, so Kristi Foss Pasek set up a lunch date. Some faces that many have not seen for awhile showed up. Linda Stowe Fink, Linda Hubers Kasparek, and Sherry Behrens. Mary Auge’s daughter Alison was married in Portland the day of the birthday party so she came to lunch with lots of pictures of the wedding. Debbie Freeman happened to be out for lunch with her brother so she joined us for pictures. I took a few pictures and wanted to share them with the class on our new blog.  Posted by Pat Nelson
